Renewable Energy Campaigns in India: Powering Change
India stands at an energy crossroads. As the world’s third-largest carbon emitter, its choices will shape the global climate future. Young activists are working to ensure those choices prioritize people and planet.
Beyond Coal
Priya Sharma grew up in a village near a coal-fired power plant in Jharkhand. Respiratory illness was common in her community, and the local river ran black with coal waste. These experiences drove her to become an advocate for clean energy.
“We’re told we must choose between development and health,” Priya says. “But that’s a false choice. Renewable energy can give us both.”
A Just Transition
Priya’s organization works with coal-dependent communities to envision and plan for a just transition—one that creates new opportunities while respecting the dignity of workers and communities.
Through AktivAsia’s regional programs, Indian energy activists have connected with movements across Asia, sharing strategies and building solidarity for a clean energy future.
