Labor Rights in Vietnam: Workers Finding Their Voice
Vietnam’s rapid economic growth has created millions of manufacturing jobs. But behind the success story, workers often face long hours, low wages, and unsafe conditions. A new generation of labor advocates is working to change that.
Speaking Up
Nguyen Thi Lan started working in an electronics factory at 18. She quickly noticed the gap between official policies and daily reality—unpaid overtime, unsafe chemical exposure, and retaliation against those who complained.
“We were told to be grateful for our jobs,” Lan recalls. “But gratitude doesn’t pay rent or heal injured workers.”
Building Worker Power
Through careful organizing and education, Lan and her colleagues have won significant improvements in their workplace. Their success has inspired workers in other factories to take similar action.
AktivAsia’s training programs have helped labor advocates across Vietnam develop skills in negotiation, legal advocacy, and international solidarity. The movement for worker dignity continues to grow.
